Yes, a picture's worth a thousand words. Or maybe a few thousand, enough to fill a whole book.
That's what I'm planning for several of my narrative paintings. I will be collaborating with my daughter, the writer in the family, to publish these books. My form of storytelling with art is to put as much symbolism and text into a single mixed media painting as possible. A few viewers will see all the symbols right away and may know the story behind the painting. But the majority of viewers who read or hear the explanation always exclaim "Oh wow! I had no idea that was all in there!"
Take for instance each of these four close-ups from my large six-foot painting titled "Hopeful":
The details of this corner of the painting: it's 1939 Nazi Germany and 901 Jewish refugees (although I have read varying numbers) wearing the despised Yellow Star are reaching out in hope of finding a country willing to offer them refuge.
They set sail on this ship, the M.S. St. Louis, on a sunny day, hopeful to reach the shores of freedom.
The ship filled with refugees is denied entry by the three countries represented here by their flags: Cuba, the U.S., and Canada.
And here's where you can question the (im)prudence of America's immigration quotas, then and now. These Jewish refugees were denied entry to safety (unlike the words from Emma Lazarus' poem posted by the Statue of Liberty) and instead were returned back to the hands of the Nazis. It is believed that most of them perished.
This episode in history will be just one chapter in a book. We will be focusing on books for children and young adults, but perhaps there will be a coffee table book in the future. Definitely a wall calendar!
